I saw Jamie’s submarine cake and couldn’t help but ask how she put it together- it is so adorable, isn’t it?!
And here’s how she made it:
Make two 13×9 cakes. Ice the top of the bottom cake layer and place the other layer on top. Then carve the cake in the shape of the submarine and cut out the area where the 2 liter pop bottle portion will go (as seen on the right). Jamie always ices the cake with vanilla frosting for a “crumb layer.” After the “crumb layer” is complete, put the cake in the refrigerator for the frosting to set. She used printouts of the characters and added a control panel with frosting.
The 2 liter pop bottle can be cut with a pair of scissors and then is added to the cake (as shown on the left), then the rest of the cake is completed with colored frosting. Cardboard was used for the propeller and wings, then those parts were frosted, but something edible, like candy or crackers could also be used.
Jamie mentioned that she likes http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com for cake design ideas and some of them give detailed information about making them.
